TOP TEN TIPS FOR HIGH RISK TRAVEL: Ever since September 11, Americans have become more complacent. Terrorism doesn't always happen at the airport & it could appear anywhere. Here are some following tips for travelers.
)-Make several photo copies of your passport, & leave one for your relatives while taking the rest on your trip. You want to have a back up copy hidden in different places. Stolen American passports is very popular abroad. I also recommend you register with the American Embassy & let them know you plan to travel abroad. Give them the details of your trip including hotel & how long your be there. If anything happens to you they will have a paper trail & they will start looking for you.
)-Be aware of your surroundings, ie"situational awareness". Never allow someone to unexpectedly creep up on you.
)-Become familiar with the aircraft emergency exits. Know where you are in relation to the next exit.
)-Don't bring military identification unless you need to ,or keep it in a separate bag. This also includes military photos in your wallet. Lets face it, we live in a dangerous world.
)-Be careful what your wearing. Don't wear clothes abroad that stand out as you being an American, or Westerner. Try to blend in with to the local culture.
)-Avoid American restaurants abroad like Mc Donalds , or burger King. Remember, your trying to blend in with the locals.
)-Listen to the flight crew. The reason we have flight attendants are to assist in case of an emergency. Attention to details & speed equals safety.
)-Keep your seatbelt fastened while seated just in case you get unexpected clear air turbulence (CAT).
)-If you see something suspicious rather at the airport, airplane, or in another country, then you need to tell the authorities.
)- Before traveling abroad, its a good idea to check the State Department for list of travel warning on a specific countries. It could warn you of not only terrorism, but also on high crime areas, or any civil unrest.
